Top 10 Tips for Your First Fondo

  1. Choose a route that matches your fitness and available equipment!

The last thing you want is to be out of gears and grinding, or even walking, up a climb.

  2. Upload the route to your bike computer

Some fondos do an excellent job marking the route. Even so, it’s reassuring to have directions on your bike computer. And it can help you navigate descents safely.

  3. Come well hydrated and fueled!

Don’t let cramps remind you that you forgot to hydrate well for the big ride.

  4. Arrive early

Packet pick up and getting yourself and your bike sorted always takes more time than anticipated. Even if it is an early start, give yourself some extra time so you don’t get to the line feeling rushed.

  5. Bring apparel for unexpectedly cold/harsh weather

Even if the forecast is warm and sunny, microclimates can be cold and we all know how chilled we can get on descents. Better to be over-prepared than shivering!

  6. Use the aid stations - wisely

Enjoy the treats, fuel up and hydrate. But, in the case of an extremely long fondo, be mindful that you don’t add hours to an already long day out.

  7. Start easy, finish strong 💪

t’s easy to feel great the first hour and get sucked into a pace that is over your current fitness level. You’re likely to regret this decision in the final hour. Start easy, and you can power to the finish.

  8. Group up!

Not only is drafting massively advantageous on flats, but the boost in morale can really help you have a great ride! Your ride partners are also likely to call out hazards, helping you feel safe and confident.

  9. Bring a change of clothes and baby wipes to clean up after

You’ve had a great, albeit sweaty day out, and it’s time to enjoy the post-ride meal and events. No need to sit in a dirty kit through it all. Change out and clean up!

  10. Enjoy your accomplishment!

You likely worked hard to prepare for this day. However it went, you got out there and gave it your best, smile and be proud of yourself! Post it to Strava, share your stats with your riding buddies, and of course drop your coach a note about how it all unfolded!
